Insurer announces plans to contribute toward the construction of the new
landmark located at Fort Benning, Ga.
COLUMBUS, Ga., March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- The Aflac Foundation
announced today a $1 million gift toward the development of a new National
Infantry Museum and Heritage Park. Built on 200 acres linking Columbus, Ga.,
and Fort Benning, the world-class facility will honor the 231-year legacy of
the Army's largest branch, the Infantry.
"The Aflac Foundation is proud to support the building of the National
Infantry Museum as a tribute to the soldiers who have given so much to our
country. The sacrifices made by soldiers and their families should always be
remembered," said Aflac Foundation President Kathelen Amos. "The museum
complex is a wonderful addition to our community and a fitting tribute to the
United States Infantry. It signifies the history and the ongoing vital role
Columbus and Fort Benning have in our nation's military efforts."
In honor of Aflac's $1 million gift, which will be paid over 10 years, the
company will receive naming rights to the Soldier Memorial Garden. This area
of the museum complex will serve as the gateway to the Memorial Walk of Honor,
a site for paying homage to fallen soldiers. The location will include soil
from the resting places of American soldiers outside the U.S.
"The community is fortunate to have a corporate citizen like Aflac," said
Museum Lead Gifts Chair Brad Turner. "They support and affect just about every
facet of community life, and I would hate to think of what our area would be
like without Aflac."
In addition to the Memorial Walk of Honor, the project will include a
parade field, an authentic World War II Company Street and a 3-D IMAX Theatre.
The facility will provide an interactive experience for visitors and display
an impressive collection of artifacts covering all facets of the history of
the United States Infantry from its inception to the present. Construction on
the new museum began in January; completion is expected in 2008. For more
