At Aflac we know that to be an ethical company, sometimes you have to talk about what’s important, even when it may not be easy to do.
It was the spring of 1995 when a mother of a child with cancer approached Aflac asking for a $25,000 donation to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to help update the floor where children were being treated for cancer. To her surprise and delight, Aflac Chief Executive Officer, Dan Amos, responded by offering $3 million while renaming the unit as The Aflac Cancer Center. Since then, Aflac and the company’s generous sales associates have embraced this cause, raising more than $118+ million to date to support children with cancer across the nation by investing in programs, treatment, and pediatric cancer research.
At the Aflac Cancer Center, we’re increasingly high tech; but more importantly, we’re increasingly high touch. Our most coveted tradition occurs when a child completes treatment. After years of grueling chemo, our kids ring the “End of Treatment" bell to mark the closing of a difficult chapter. Parents, doctors and nurses line the halls to celebrate as a child rings the bell victoriously as if to say, “I beat cancer, and so can you.”
The Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders is a national leader among childhood cancer, hematology and blood and marrow transplant programs, serving infants through young adults. It is recognized as one of the largest and most renowned childhood cancer centers in the United States, annually caring for more than 2,300 children with cancer and more than 4,200 children with sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other blood disorders.
