Aflac is committed to maintaining and improving the environment through its SmartGreen^® initiative.

Our goals include continuously educating Aflac employees about protecting and conserving our environment, both at work and at home.

Additionally, by the close of 2012 we hope to:

• Maintain Energy Star certification on at least 70 percent of eligible Aflac-owned facilities (as measured by square footage), up from 45 percent when the SmartGreen initiative began in 2009.
• Increase the percentage of recycled waste to 70 percent.

Increase the percentage of marketing materials printed on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper to at least 90 percent

Newsweek Magazine

Newsweek magazine honored Aflac in 2012 by once again including us in its Green Rankings of America's Largest 500 Companies. Aflac has moved up 165 spots from its initial 2012 ranking of 234 to No. 69 overall and is ranked No. 7 in the Environmental Impact category.  Newsweek Magazine, "Green Rankings 2012," October 22, 2012. 

ENERGY STAR

Aflac earned Energy Star recognition for four of the five buildings on our main campus. Our data center recently became the 10th U.S. data center to earn the Energy Star label.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

The U.S. Green Building Council awarded its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-Commercial Interior (LEED) Gold certification to Aflac for the renovation of the company's CSC office building in Columbus. The 133,000-square-foot structure, which houses the company’s Sales and Marketing departments, is the first in Columbus to earn LEED certification. Aflac is committed to following LEED principles in future renovations.

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certification

The majority of Aflac’s marketing materials and other mass-produced literature is printed on Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper. Our goal is to print 90 percent or more of our materials on FSC-certified paper by the close of 2012.
