Aflac Foundation Commits $1 Million to Columbus Technical College

Donation from Aflac kicks off building fund for new state-of-the-art health sciences facility.

Columbus, Ga. – Oct. 1, 2006 – The Aflac Foundation, Inc. has pledged $1 million to Columbus Technical College's inaugural capital campaign, Tomorrow's Workforce …Today. Aflac's gift is the first to be committed for the construction of a new high-tech health sciences facility at the college's future campus location on River Road in Columbus. The new structure will provide additional classrooms and a library for area residents majoring in the health sciences field.

"Columbus Technical College is an important business partner with Aflac and our ongoing needs for skilled, trained employees in a number of areas in the company,” said Kathelen Amos, president of the Aflac Foundation. “There is no greater way to make an impact on the quality of life in our community and in our region than to provide a skilled workforce, and to equip individuals to meet their personal financial goals. In the health care sector, as well as the other areas served by Columbus Technical College, this expansion will greatly impact our community in a positive way."

Aflac and Columbus Technical College have worked together for several years on a number of projects including a cutting-edge training program for the insurer's customer service representatives. The training initiative focuses on equipping participants with valuable information on insurance industry trends, product knowledge and customer service skills. To date, over 300 employees have completed the program. Since the partnership began, retention within the service areas has increased from 87 percent to 94 percent.

“We are extremely grateful to Aflac and its Foundation for this generous gift. Aflac is a company that is recognized around the world and yet continues to demonstrate that its heart is in Columbus. Our community is a better place because they care,” said Bob Jones, Columbus Technical College President.

Aflac's donation is earmarked for the campus library. Construction for the new facility is slated to begin in May 2007.
