COLUMBUS, Ga., Aug. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- "Rock the Apple ...
Georgia Style," a benefit to honor the Georgia Republican delegation, has
raised $250,000 for Camp Sunshine. Camp Sunshine is a nonprofit retreat in
Decatur, Ga. for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.
AFLAC, one of the major sponsors of the event, presented a check for the
money raised to Camp Sunshine at the benefit Monday evening.
Since its inception in 1983, Camp Sunshine has provided programs
throughout the year to give children with cancer the opportunity to enjoy
normal activities like swimming, horseback riding, arts and crafts, and making
friends. The program is free of charge to families, and includes 24-hour
on-site medical and psychosocial support. In 2003, Camp Sunshine House was
built as a facility to provide year-round emotional and social support for
children with cancer and their families. It is a place for families coping
with cancer to come together for support, information and fun. Camp Sunshine
is a nonprofit organization funded solely by private foundations, corporate
gifts, organizations and individuals.
"We are overwhelmed by this generous gift and the increased awareness that
this party has brought to Camp Sunshine," said Sally Hale, director, Camp
Sunshine. "The amount raised by this one event can by itself fund our program
for teenagers with cancer for a full year."
"Rock the Apple ... Georgia Style" coincides with this week's Republican
National Convention in New York City, providing a prominent setting to bring
awareness to, and raise funds for, Camp Sunshine.
"This event truly is a party with a purpose," said David Pringle, vice
president, Federal Relations, AFLAC. "We are pleased to be a part of an event
that brought together so many companies to support one of our favorite
charities."
In addition to main sponsors AFLAC and Southern Company, other sponsoring
companies include: American Trucking Association; UPS; Amgen; Time Warner;
BellSouth; Home Depot; Siemens; AT&T; Blue Cross Blue Shield of GA; Ciba
Vision; Credit Union National Association; DISCUS; National Beer Wholesalers
Association; Prudential Financial; Security Industries Association; Wal-Mart
Stores, Inc.; Wine and Spirits Wholesalers Association; and Yamaha.
